Cartoon Animals

This lesson was taught as a part of an after-school drawing and painting class for youth ages 9-12. Students were asked to choose one of eight pre-selected animals and translate the animal into cartoon form with the following guidelines in mind:

  1. The animal must show a distinct personality.

  2. The animal cannot be wearing any clothes or accessories, though articles can be implied through the manipulation of the animal’s already existing features.

Goals for the project included having students:

  • Identify defining features of different animals,

  • Explore how manipulating and exaggerating certain body features can add personality to a cartoon character,

  • Integrate human expression and body language with animal body features, and

  • Verbally share what creative decisions they made and why they made those decisions.
