Squishies (Exquisite Corpse)

A squishy is a soft sculpture that takes a drawing and transforms it into an object resembling a plushie toy. Exquisite Corpse (as referred to in this project) is a drawing game where a paper is folded into three sections, for a head, torso, and legs. Each section is completed in sequence by a different person without seeing the previous sections. When revealed, the drawing will show a strange hodgepodge of a character.

The project was completed by a class of 3rd grade students. Prior to beginning their squishies, students participated in a game of Exquisite Corpse in groups. The resulting hybrid creatures then became examples of characters the students could create for their squishies. The project asked students to create their own characters with mismatched body features (head, torso, and legs). Emphasis was placed on practicing imagination and creativity, as well as creating art at a bigger scale.
