Still-Life Drawing

7th and 8th grade students participated in a series of exercises aimed at developing skills in observational drawing.

The first part of the lesson asked students to find different shapes within a 2D image of a still-life composition. The exercise began with a demonstration of how to see different values as separate shapes. The purpose of this first exercise was to help students approach drawing reflections, shadows, and highlights in a more structured and tangible way.

The second part of the lesson asked students to take what they practiced in the first exercise and draw a 3D still-life object from observation. Emphasis was placed on looking for shapes first rather than immediately jumping into blending or simply staying with contour drawing. Drawings were considered complete when the object filled the page and the surface under the object was rendered as well.
